Charity of Choice - The Albany Police Athletic League

Mission:
The Albany Police Athletic League (PAL), Inc. builds partnerships among youth, police and the community through collaborative programs designed to encourage and develop good citizenship and improves the quality of life in Albany, New York.

History:
In early 1988, a group of concerned and dedicated individuals came together with a common goal in mind: Develop an organization that would reduce or prevent the incidence of juvenile crime in Albany, New York. The group that formed was a multi-disciplinary team representing law enforcement, community-based organizations, clergy, businesses, schools, residents, and teachers and together they built a framework to combat juvenile violence in their communities. To obtain that goal the Albany Police Athletic League, Inc. [PAL] was officially formed in April of 1988.

Albany PAL was designed to address juvenile crime, based on the premise that the lack of constructive opportunities in a young person's environment can lead to delinquency. PAL's delinquency prevention efforts target the, traditionally, underserved youth in the City of Albany. Early on, Albany PAL worked to bring youth together in large one-day activities. Albany residents, community leaders and policy-makers embraced PAL's methods and began to show support.

The early-intervention model to reduce troublesome behavior among children continued to be successful. In the 1990s, PAL focused energy on building multi-day after school programs and activities for youth in grades five through eight. PAL was again able to expand and offer expanded programming to include educational and recreational activities. At the close of the decade, more youth were engaging in positive activities, had access to caring adult role models and were building relationships with local police officers and community leaders.

Today, PAL's mission remains constant: build partnerships among youth, police and the community through collaborative programs designed to encourage and develop good citizenship and improve the quality of life in Albany, New York. PAL continues to expand and fill the gap by offering multiple athletic, educational and recreational opportunities that are otherwise unavailable or inaccessible to youth at home.

Blurb:
Building brighter futures for more than 20 years in the City of Albany, New York-- The Albany Police Athletic League (PAL), Inc. is a juvenile crime prevention program that brings local youths, City police and Albany community residents together in non-law enforcement settings. PAL accomplishes its goals by providing numerous educational, recreational, and athletic programs to thousands of Albany youth each year. These activities equip youths to build relationships; instill self-respect and discipline; and develop character. Ranging from Chess, to Martial Arts, to Youth Leadership Council to Lacrosse -- There is a program for everyone at PAL. PAL membership is open to all youth who live in or attend school in the City of Albany regardless of race, sex, or socioeconomic circumstances with an emphasis on those youth who are most underserved and underprivileged. PAL is dedicated to providing youth with the support and skills they will need to journey towards a brighter future.
